So my usual morning goes a little something like this…pop up (or drag myself miserably) out of bed. Brush my teeth and put decent non-bed clothes on. Make my bed. Fix my coffee. Get breakfast in order for the kids. Get the kids up and dressed. Tie up loose ends and scurry everyone into the car and off to school. Notice something missing there? Right, I never fed myself. I recognized this deficit in my morning routine years ago and figured it was feeding into my declining metabolism. I always thought, “It would be so nice, if I could just have my breakfast in a glass and keep it moving”.
Why not grab a pre-mix?
Didn’t take long to figure out that I could in fact make a tasty breakfast in a glass for myself without tossing some eggs, meat, pancakes, and fruit into a blender and pouring it up…lol (yuck!). The barrier for me though was finding something suitable for my palate and my waistline. I didn’t want something that would be super high in sugar and carbs. However, I didn’t want something that was going to be chalky and taste like dirt (because I can’t think of any other way to describe a lot of these pre-mixed protein shakes). I also have an inversion for all of the sugar substitutes except Sucralose so that was an important factor to consider too.
After combing through Pinterest, I found a few favorites of recipes that seemed do-able and I tweaked them a little. I’ve finally found a reliable mix of ingredients that work well (and fast) for me. Before I share that though, a few considerations…
Now you saw my oh-so picky considerations above. Choosing the right protein to accomplish this is key and I finally found this one that works the absolute best for me. You should check out my Finally Found My Protein post to see what fed into that decision!
Pick Your Poison (just kidding, pick your flavor 🙂 )
My shake can also take on whatever I’m in the mood for that morning via my add-ins. Feeling like a chocolate milkshake? Then, just add some cocoa powder. Feeling like some coconut cream pie? Add some coconut extract and butter flavor extract. Feeling like some lemon pie? Swap out that coconut extract for lemon extract. The list just goes on and on.
Choose Your Weapon…
Now what I blend the shake in is pretty important to me too. A big blender that I have to pour out of and take up tons of space in the dishwasher with? Ain’t nobody got time for that! I’ve managed to have decent success with function and affordability with the a personal Nutri Ninja . When I’m done blending, I can either stick the straw straight into the cup and move on about my business or pour it up into another glass of choice. Either way, I’m only taking the space of a large cup instead of huge blender in my dishwasher. Anything to get everything in there in as few unloading and reloading sessions as possible 🙂
Got a little recipe for you. Wanna see it? Here it goes…
- 8-10 oz unsweetened almond milk
- 1 scoop unflavored protein powder (I prefer Isopure)
- 1 medium/large frozen banana (cut into slices before frozen)
- 1 tablespoon sweetener of choice ( I prefer sucralose)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Add in flavors of choice (see my Pick Your Poison post for a few ideas)
- Dump all ingredients into your blender.
- Blend until smooth.
- Drink up!
- Handle your business
#3 and #4 can be done spontaneously 🙂
